Our dear sister went home to be with her maker, June 13, 2000. She was born October 10, 1910, to J.W., and Essie Smith in Taylor County, TX. She married James B. Harris in Atwell, TX in November 1930. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for many years and was a charter member of the Colorado City, TX Primitive Baptist Church in October 1980.
At the age of 70 when Colorado City Church was in the middle of a building project, Sister Gussie was up on a ladder, which had been placed upon a cotton trailer, helping to put siding on the annex. She supported the church, not only with her generous financial contributions, but she also was there in the hot temperature, donating and selling whatever she could when the church had a garage sale to raise money. She insisted on taking her turn in cleaning the church building until she was past 85 years of age.
If ever she missed a service, it was time to check on her, because she was sick. She was always there with a sweet smile and a friendly word for everyone. Young people gravitated to her. She made them feel special. She will be deeply missed by her brothers and sisters and will be remembered for her zeal and love of her church; but we rejoice in the knowledge and comfort that she dwells in heaven reaping the rewards of God's promises.
She is survived by one sister, Louise Morphew of Missouri; a nephew, Dan Mauldin of Moran, Texas; six nieces, Elsie Biggers of Colorado City, Grace Ann Meads of Baird, JoAnn Meads of Baird, Rhonda Powell of Stamford, Denise Love of Colorado City, Jamie Jacobs of San Antonio; and a host of cousins.
In loving memory,
Ron Stewart, Church Clerk
Elder Raymond Kirkpatrick, Pastor
