BROTHER GEORGE W. SEGLAR

We, the members of the Henrietta Primitive Baptist Church of Henrietta, Texas, have laid to rest a dear and precious brother. Deeply saddened in body, but rejoicing in spirit, Brother George passed this scene of action Jan.14, 1999 at the age of 92 years. Brother George was born Nov. 26, 1906. He was a member and a deacon of the church where he served. Brother George was on his way to church, at the time in good health, when his car was hit by an eastbound coal train on its way to Dallas-Fort Worth. Although, his external injuries did not look all that bad, his internal ones were. After a two-week stay in the hospital, he went to a local nursing home. Seemed if he was doing some better the first three or four weeks, but then came down with lung congestion and went back to the hospital on Jan. 11th, having a stroke on January 14, 1999. Brother George lived about an hour longer, but was pronounced brain dead at the time of the stroke.

Brother George, as I have mentioned, was a deacon in the church, to that office he served well, being concerned of the welfare of the church and missing very few times. He had his own place to sit, like most members do, but the most striking to me, is how he sat, straight back, head up, never dosing or going to sleep. He was with the preaching from start to finish.

His wife, Lillie, mentioning Brother George in her conversation, always called him a gentleman, and that he was, mild, kind, tenderness of heart, well mannered, refined and polished. He stood out, not only in church views, but also in public. It was good to be with Brother George in public, for his glow seemed to give me a glow, just being at his side. He was a true credit to everyone he came into contact with. Everyone was proud just to know Brother George. He was a specimen of what we all should try to be.

If there were only two seats in heaven, Brother George would be seated nearby and perhaps, if so, I would never see him, for I would be so far in the back. But I trust this is not so, for we, if I am permitted, shall be made like unto God’s glorious Son, and will be seated with Him, or standing, it would make no difference. Words cannot express my, or the church’s thoughts for Brother George.

Though, we will miss him we will not forget him.
