THE GOSPEL

By Elder Clem E. Cook

Most  Christians think that the Gospel is the means that God uses to bring about new birth, spiritual life, or  that all  that have been born again will come to a true belief of the gospel. Though these be well meaning, honest, and God fearing children of our heavenly Father, they do not understand the teachings of the gospel: no more than those that Jesus told to "Search the scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they  which testify of me."  Jesus also taught in a parable of the sower that there would be some who hear the word and not understand it, and when this happens, the wicked one take the word out of their hearts, and even though some received it with joy, they cannot endure the tribulations or persecutions that comes because of the word, and some will allow the deceitfulness of riches to choke the word. Surely showing us that all of these are capable of hearing the gospel, but it is of no profit to them. Therefore, Jesus Christ preached, saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand;  Repent ye, and believe the gospel.

First,  I would direct your attention to 2 Tim 1:10 where it tells us that the purpose of the gospel is to bring life and  immortality to light: the word "light" is referring to understanding knowledge. The gospel does not bring life or immortality; it gives us an understanding of it. And to assure us that the gospel is also that which is known as the word of God we turn to Eph 1:13 and Col 1:5. The word "gospel" is defined as announcement of good news; as a good message, or glad tidings: whereas the word of truth is also defined as tidings of truth.  The scriptures which testify of Christ, are the word of truth that brings glad tidings to the children of God.

Then these well meaning christians will say,  But if you do not believe this gospel and repent, then you  will not receive  immortality; therefore, have no eternal life with God. Yet, the scriptures say, "What if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid.: yea, let God be  true, but every man a liar: as it is written, that thou mightiest be justified in thy sayings. and mightiest overcome when thou art judged." [See Psa 51:4 and 62:9]  Also they should know that believing is a work of righteousness which can never justify one before God.

GOSPEL SALVATION

The word of God teaches of a salvation that is not the gift of eternal life, one that the children of  God can work out; one that  comes through belief of the word/gospel which testifies of Christ. Thus teaching that there are those that are begotten with the word of truth. See 1 Cor. 4:15, James 1:18 and 1 Pet 1:3.

These words beget/begotten, which are used to show lineage, are also used to show what which is brought forth, and does not always indicate birth. This is the case of these scriptures. In James it is speaking of the gifts  that comes down from Father of lights; thus showing that this is a gift of light: knowledge/ understanding. And the purpose of them receiving this gift was that they should be the kind of first fruit of his creatures: the creatures are those created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God had foreordained that they should walk therein. Ref. Eph 2:10; 2 Cor 5:17, Gal 6:15.

The gospel does not have any creating power; but it does testify of him who does. So it was written, "Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his  might, let not the rich man glory in his riches. But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise loving kindness, judgment and righteousness, in the earth; for in these  things I delight, saith the Lord."

Paul wrote to those he considered to be his sons through the gospel; the church at Corinth, to them that were sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints. And  James was speaking to those of the twelve tribes that had been scattered; Israelites.

Whereas Peter addressed those who were strangers, elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit.

It is essential for us to know  that the word/gospel of our Lord was not given to benefit all mankind; that it is given to and for the benefit of the elect. The elect being those that are the new creatures which are born of the Spirit. Also knowing that all mankind are flesh, but not all are spirit. And that  God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth. [There be many that worship in  spirit, but few in  truth.]  Therefore, let us strive to rightly divide the word of truth; that we may also worship in truth. And thereby work out our own salvation; for God has worked in the will and to do of his good pleasure.

BAPTISM?  BY WHAT AUTHORITY

By Elder Bob Allgood

These are the two questions Jesus asked the chief priests and elders of the people, when they  questioned his authority in Matthew 21:23-27. But they would not answer, reasoning with themselves, saying, "If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?  But if we shall say, Of men: we  fear the people for all hold John as a prophet. And so they gave an evasive answer, "We cannot tell."  This is the kind of an answer you expect from a middle of the road  Politician, or a "dumb dog that cannot bark" [see Isaiah 56:10-11].  This answer had all the aroma of a frightened skunk spraying its foul smelling secretions in an attempt to ward off an attack by  it's enemy.

John the Baptist "was a man sent from God" [John 1:6] - "to make ready a people prepared [they were already prepared] for the Lord" [Luke 1:17]. John the Baptist was "filled with the Holy Ghost even from his mother's womb" and was to be "great in the sight of the Lord" [Luke 1:15]. Jesus said, "Among them that are born of women, there hath not  arisen  a greater than John the Baptist," except for Jesus Christ himself, being the least [Mikros= younger in age] in the kingdom of heaven. John the Baptist was more than a prophet, he was a gospel Evangelist [Matt 11:8-15, LK 16:16].

John's baptism was authorized by God Himself - His Authority was Heaven sent. It was not a new form of any old Testament Jewish ritual or washing.  John's Baptism was to separate unto the Messiah a "people prepared for the Lord." John the Baptist was born of the lineage of the Aaronic Priesthood,  see Luke 1:5.  The purpose of John's baptism was to place the name of God on the chosen people of God - the Israel of God, see Numbers 6:22-27 and Galatians 6:15-16. When the proper candidate is Scripturally baptized in water into the Lord's church, he is baptized in the name of the Father, in the name of The Son, and in the name of the Holy Ghost [Matt 28:19].

Scriptural baptism is to be administered in the name of the Godhead, "for these three are one" [not  three in one- 1 John 5:7].  When one is baptized  in the Name of Jesus, he or she [to be politically correct] is baptized in the Name of the Godhead - "For in him dwelleth the fulness of the Godhead bodily" [Col 2:9]. To know Christ is to know the Father; to be in Christ is to  be in the Holy Spirit, for these three are one [Read very carefully John 14]. You may not agree with me on this. I respect your right to be wrong if you want to be.

Jesus Christ, the Messiah, began his earthly ministry by  walking about  60 miles from Galilee to the river Jordan to be baptized by John the Baptist. Why? Why couldn't Jesus just dunk himself, or pour water on his  head, or sprinkle a few drops of water on his forehead, or just forget it?  After all, being God manifest in the flesh, why should he go to all that effort?  Because He must fulfill all righteousness and John the Baptist was given the authority of God to baptize.

Jesus went to John to "Be Anointed"; and to "Fulfill all righteousness  [Read Daniel 9:24-26; and to be publicly identified as The Son of God.  What a shame, we have some who claim to be the children of God who won't walk 60 feet down an aisle to be baptized. When Jesus, the Messiah was baptized, the Father spoke from heaven saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."  The Name of God was placed upon him by water baptism. Water baptism did not make him The Son of God,  Jesus was born The Son of God-

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God--And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. [and we beheld His Glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father] full of grace and truth."  [Matt 3:13-17; John 1:1, 14].

Scriptural Baptism requires: The Proper Candidate being baptized in; The Proper mode; for the Proper Reason; and by the Proper Authority.

The Proper Candidate: is a child of God. Jesus did not come to John for the purpose of becoming a child of God. He was already The Only Begotten Son of God. Baptism does not make one a child of God. Baptism is an "Act of Righteousness" to be  fulfilled [Matt 3:15-6]. Only a child of God; one who has been born from above [born again, quickened, made alive by God's spirit - see John 3:3-8 and Eph 2:1-6] and gives evidence to that experience  [Matt 3:7-9]; and to the fact that they Believe that Jesus is The Christ [Acts 8:35-39] is a proper candidate for Baptism. This order is critical and irreversible. Philip required of the Ethiopian eunuch a testimony to his Spiritual birth and his Belief in the Gospel before he would baptize him [Acts 8:35-37].

Today most churches will  take anything that moves, crawls, or pays it's way to the front of the building to join, regardless of their testimony. John the Baptist would not accept all that came to his baptism. He said to the Pharisees and Sadducees, "Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance." Repentance and Faith must be evident in the proper candidate for Baptism. This excludes Infant baptism, because such is unnecessary. Baptism is a Timely act, not an  Eternal one.

The Proper Mode:  John baptized "with water and in water."

The word baptize comes from the Greek word Baptizo, meaning to "whelm or cover."  To baptize "with water and in water" means to fully immerse.  The Scripture says, and Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water." When Philip baptized the Ethiopian eunuch "they went down both into the water, both Philip and the Eunuch, and he baptized him."  [Acts 8:38].

The Authoritative  Mode for Baptism is "with water in water,"

i.e. Full Immersion.  But there is more to it than just "getting immersed," so what if  you have been fully  immersed?  Many cult religions such as the Mormons, [who believe that Adam is their God in heaven, and Christ was not born of the Holy Spirit], immerse their candidates and call it "baptism".  In fact some of their  members volunteer to be immersed  hundreds of times for their dead relatives and friends.  Is this Scriptural Baptism?  No way, Jose!

THE HOLY SPIRIT VS HYPE

By Elder Hulan Bass

Eph. 4:4 tells me there is "One Spirit."  Only one real, true, Holy Spirit!  Yet, in the Bible  it is expressed  with  77 different  words. 1st John 4:1 - tells me to "try the spirits"  whether they are of God. The false spirits mentioned in the Bible  are expressed in 18 different ways - false, evil, seducing, wicked, foul, perverse, unclean, etc.

The thrust and burden of this writing is to clarify which is which. Many times we may think we are doing Service for God in - John 16:2 - Jesus speaking: "They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service."  Many  times we can "think" we know when we do not - 1st Cor. 8:2   Many times we can confuse the Holy Spirit with "Hype."

There are five listed sins against the Holy Spirit.  The wicked always sins against The H. S., and many times and in some cases the Regenerated Child of God can also.  Notice 12:31-32 lists:

1.  Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost."  [No child of God can do this].2.  Lie to the  Holy Ghost - Acts 5:1-11.  3. "Resist the Holy Ghost."- Acts 7:51.  4.  "Grieve the Holy Ghost - Eph 4:30,   5.  "Quench the Spirit -

1st Thess. 5:19.  I have found in my experiences that  many  times we are doing one of these when we really did not intend to. What causes us to do such?   Answer - the ungodly spirits in the world.  1st Tim 4:1  tells us - "Now the spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils."

The point being that we may do this from the leadership of seducing spirits, which operate in us very subtly, while we think we are doing that which is right. You can also do such knowing it is wrong but the framework of this will always be carnal. Rom. 8:6.  These five sins against the Spirit are never "intended"  while we feel to be "In the Spirit": nevertheless, this is just when Satan is most deceptive. He can tell us just how humble, meek and sincere we are about our "religion."  He will make a Pharisee and hypocrite out of us right quick.  Matt. 6:16; Luke 18:11-12.

One of my old fathers in the ministry of years past once told me that if we are not careful we can become so "self righteous" till we start "looking at our looking" instead of Christ.  We can become so "self sanctified" till we are "proud of" our humility..

This leads me now  to the point in the discussion I desire amplifying. At this point we go beyond The True Spirit of Christ into a form of "Hype,"  Satan is its leader. We can have a "form of godliness but deny  the power thereof" placing the power within ourselves--2nd Tim 3:5. As soon as we recognize this self-condition, we are advised in this same verse - "from such turn away."  V. 7 compares this situation as  "Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth."  This is sad, but I must say I have met some in this category.

The Dictionary defines "Hype"  from "hyper" which is a prefix- 1. Over; above; beyond; excessive;  2 denoting an abnormal state of excess; "hyper" as a prefix  magnifies the excessiveness of its precise subject under consideration, even our "orthodoxy, intellect, excitement, enthusiasm, confidence, patriotism, reverence, spirituality, religious, vigilance, etc.  Isn't old Satan crafty? Paul tells us  in - 2nd Cor. 2:11, "Lest Satan should get an advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices." He told of this sinfulness to the Church of Corinth. Are we any better? Let us pray for Godly Deliverance from such environment.

I have been in sales work most of my secular life, and such is most conducive  to "Hype"  I can remember back through the years of attending sales conferences, conventions, meetings, etc. and coming back home all "pumped-up" with the latest "sales gimmicks" and "products." We must be very alert of this hype concerning "Get rich quick scheme."

This is also found right now in  politics, but other areas of our lives are not immune- social, civic, educational, economics/ money, sports, entertainment [movies/VCR, etc.], recreation, especially music, various forms of insurance, automobiles, real estate, houses, oil and gas, fool's gold [iron pyrite]; yes, even computers, but most especially let us be aware of such in religion. This religion factor today is the height of "fools gold" - Hype.  It can even affect the true church - and is.

Concerning computers, may I warn our people, especially our young, to be careful concerning the use of your Modem in going "on line" with "America On-Line" and "The Internet."  I assure you up-front that satan is using the computer just as fast as anyone. Satan, the Devil is in the "cutting-edge" of high technology also. Much harm has already come to many from such ungodliness.  It is addictive, just as the devil's cunning allurements are ad dictive and destructive.  Let all of us be more alert to these "Computer Games" also. They may seem to be fun and educational, but they certainly are not spiritual.

Let us be careful not to confuse what the Holy Spirit is really leading us  into with  "Hype." These latter times are tricky!

Acts 16 gives this lesson its credence. Acts 16:6-10 - Paul and Silas went throughout Phrygia and the region of   Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia. After they were come to Mysia they assayed [decided within their own impressions] to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit suffered them not. We learn that  making decisions without consulting prayerfully The Holy Spirit, can be an empty endeavor. Have you ever done something  "anyway" even when you somehow felt ambivalent and blind? V. 9 - informs us that a vision appeared to Paul in the night there stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. V. 10. And  after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavored to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them."  It is conclusive. What they had "in mind"- what they were "thinking" was not what the spirit  directed, but what they had not thought of was what the Spirit did direct.

If they had hone into these "Spirit forbidden" places, it would have been pure "hype." Pretending the Lord is sending them is being done today. Again 1st John 4:1 - further tells us why we should "try the spirits" is "because many false prophets are gone out into the world."  These go fueled by "hype" and not "The Holy Spirit."

I do not pretend to tell you I always know the difference, but I am aware that such needs to be weighed carefully, prayerfully, patiently before the endeavor and thrust is engaged.

I will close this compendium with a beautiful lesson in John 1:41-46. Andrew finds his brother Peter and told him, "We have found the Messias, which is being interpreted, the Christ." He  brought him  to Jesus. Jesus said to him, "Thou art Simon, the son of Jonas;  thou shalt be called Cephas." The next day Peter found Philip, and said,  "Follow me."  Then Philip finds Nathanael, and said unto him, "We have found him, of whom Moses is the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." And Nathanael said unto him, "Can there any  good come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and See."

We have a chain of communications involved in this  narrative. Andrew told  Peter, who told Philip, who told Nathanael. Finally, as usual, there was one who doubted. When one doubts, the best advice that can be given is "come and see."  Nathanael did.  V. 49. He found Jesus, called Him "Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the King of Israel." There is the difference in the workings of Truth in the Spirit and just "Hype."

Jesus told Nathanael in V. 48, "Before  that Philip called thee, when thou was under the fig tree, I saw thee."  The Spirit  always works first, before the preacher gets on the scene. However, secondly, the preacher helps clear up any confusion, and tells all to Come and See. When you really experience the  true spiritual felt presence of the Lord, you will henceforth know it is not "hype."

Hype is  found in many forms. It  sneaks in on us in some point of "new  doctrine, new practice, new discipline, new duty, new interpretation, new endeavor, thrust or project, some particular church or preacher or deacon or sister or whatever."  It will excite us.  False spirits do this often. It has caused many church splits and various denominations have formed back through the centuries.

Persecutions, tyranny and afflictions are many resulting from hype. The children of Israel in - Exodus 32:1 - said unto Aaron, "Up, make us gods, which shall go before us, for as for this  Moses - we wot not what is become of him." Aaron then advised them all to give him their gold, earrings, and they fashioned such with a graving tool into a molten calf.. V. 4 - they then said, "These by thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt."

This is a clear O. T. picture of "hype."  This is really "Fool's Gold."  Let us strive not with the Holy Spirit but let us prayerfully week guidance from the Holy Spirit which can and will light our pathway in the Old Path  and Ancient Landmarks.

Ordination Services of

... BROTHER TIM MONTGOMERY

Old Union Primitive Baptist Church, Lonsdale, Arkansas

After morning service, prayer by Elder Steve Wilkinson and sermons by Elders Hulan Bass and Larry Webb. We dismissed and after the noon  dinner, we met back in song service at 2:00 p.m.

The Old Union Primitive Baptist Church met in conference and the church voted, seconded and passed the motion to continue with the ordination service. The church spokesman, Brother Harris Hopper, stated the church was pleased with the seating of the presbytery. Elder Sonny Huckaby was voted as moderator, Elder Hulan Bass, voted as clerk; Elder Charles Sandage was voted to interrogate Brother Tim Montgomery.

Elder Charles Sandage asked him - Do you believe in biblical creation or how? And the answer was from Genesis 1 and John 1. Brother Tim answered the question concerning the word of God and spoke of it as the living word and the written word. And a question was asked in  Matthew 22:42 concerning where Jesus said, whose Son is he?  And Brother Tim said the answer is that Jesus is the Son of the living God.  The question was asked, Is the written  word infallible? Brother Tim said it was divinely inspired and God moved!  The Bible is revealed by the Holy Spirit!  Is man created of God and formed from the dust of the ground?  Brother Tim answered in the affirmative that all humanity is from Adam. He answered in the affirmative and was asked if God was in Christ on the earth?  Brother Tim's answer was from 1 Tim 3:16. God was manifested in the flesh and conceived in the Virgin Mary.  Jesus Christ was both man and God. Was Christ born as a baby was the question asked and why?

And Brother Tim responded, to offer a sacrifice for the remission of sins for his  people; for the elect only - John 6:38 - God through Jesus Christ chose in covenant before the foundation of the world for his people and willingly accomplished such on Calvary's Cross and finished the work by the death, burial, and resurrection.

The next question Brother Tim was asked is why do you want to preach the gospel then?  Brother Tim said as Isaiah 40:1-2:  To comfort God's children, to  teach and proclaim  the finished work of Christ.  The gospel will not help redeem them, but will benefit them in causing them to worship and praise and thank Him. Their failure of hearing the gospel does not cause loss of eternal salvation, but does save them timely in this life was Brother Tim's answer to that question.

Brother Tim, are you willing to assume the duties and sacrifices of the calling to preach the gospel, giving up the praise of men and honors of this world? Not forsaking your family, but always seeking first His kingdom and giving everything to Him?

And Brother Tim, very humbly answered in the affirmative.  Brother Charles admonished him to prayerfully always go to God first and keep on faithfully keeping on.

Elder Bill Huckaby asked about water baptism. And Brother Tim said it was the answer of a good conscious toward God was its utility. Also, the meaning of the other ordinances?  Brother Tim answered them correctly.

Elder James Winston asked reference, is there an eternal Hell?  Brother Tim answered clearly in the affirmative.

Then Elder David Montgomery knelt around about Brother Tim and others, and  prayed, "Our Lord and our God, have mercy upon us. Our hearts are enlarged. This moment is so precious to lay hands upon this man.  Bless him to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. This ceremony has Thy signature upon Brother Tim. Hedge him about as he may be called to pastor a church.  Following Thy will, and not his." Brother David prayed for Sister Charlotte and his family in the years to come. "O God, we thank Thee for these blessings. Glory, and Honor, and Power, and the Kingdom forever and ever, Amen."

The  members of the  presbytery, the Elders and Deacons, came lovingly, fervently and in the Spirit and laid their hands upon Brother Tim in a most beautiful scene of touching feelings of the very presence of the Spirit of Christ. The spokesman, Brother Harris Hopper, then escorted  Sister Charlotte to sit by her husband's  side and affirmed the church's approval of the work of the  presbytery thus far.

Elder Mike Montgomery  came into the pulpit and humbly began the charge to his double brother, in the flesh and in the Spirit and now yoke fellow in the ministry. He encouraged him in the Lord in the preaching of the gospel - no greater endeavor exists in helping God's people. "This burden is a privilege and you are a steward of this responsibility."  And he quoted from 1 Cor 4:1, "Faithfulness endows this office." Brother Tim, remain faithful. The truth is in the church and is the pillar and ground of it. Everything is in the church that Jesus built and He built it, and, as stewards, we are to protect without adding or taking away things Christ put in it.

Brother Tim, leave the church through the years just as you found it, as Christ established it. The church is the greatest entity on this Earth for us, our children, and our children's children. The ministry is a sacred office, not above others, but you are in an office of service. Priorities are very important but will cause some sacrifices, however, the blessings far outweigh those sacrifices. First a minister, then you are a husband and  father, but flexible and balance is the key.

Sister Charlotte, do not detract from Brother Tim's ministry by your own deportment. You can be a great source of strength to Tim's ministry which will enhance the edification of the people." 1 Tim 6:20 was then read and commented on; "Remember your older ministers and their counsel and go to them."  1  Cor 8:2 - "Brother Tim, you will never know it all.  Always go to God in prayer as your ultimate advisor."  Then Brother Mike and Brother Tim let brotherly love continue with  a warm embrace.

Elder Hugh Montgomery then came into the stand and began to speak from Jer. 6:16 about "The Old Paths."  He said, "Brother Tim, always ask and see and stand. I speak to you as an Elder, and not as your father.  The good way is to be always followed. Study to tell the people  and rest shall follow. Be ready to study  so as to answer the people's questions so growth in the people and yourself will  prevail. Always be humble, not a know-it-all, but be ready to expound the word of truth. Let your light so shine. The world is watching your walk wherever you go.  Guard privileged information to edifying. "Walk the walk," setting the example. All week long, and not just on Sunday morning. As a pastor you will find it is a mutual love between you and the people.

Sister Charlotte, you are wonderful helpmate to Brother Tim, but pray for strength to your God to continue. Walk a straight walk in love." Again, embracing of Brother Hugh to Brother Tim and Sister Charlotte.

The moderator,  Elder Sonny Huckaby, came forth with loving and encouraging closing comments, saying we know not what the future may hold, but always follow the Lord's leading.

The church spokesman affirmed the church's work of the presbytery.

Elder Sonny Huckaby, Moderator

RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS ARE NOT CHRISTIAN FESTIVALS

First of all, I want to point out that I believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as much as anyone else believes it. But, I am very much opposed to the mixing together of  Christianity and paganism.  I see a lot written and said about the Easter Sunday Festival.  The same is true of Christmas.

I want to quote from two of our very able forefathers concerning Easter and Christmas as well.  "The word Easter is found only once in our Bible, and that is in Acts XII 4.  But the word there translated Easter is found in many other places in the Book, but is translated Easter in no other place. The word is Pascha, and has reference  to the passover.  It means passover.

The Easter observance is a Roman Catholic invention, and they set the time as having to do with full moon. Hence  Easter Sunday comes on different Sundays. The Catholics established the observance of Easter Sunday in  commemoration of the resurrection of Christ, and yet it is not at a fixed time. It is heathen in its origin, the Catholics borrowing it from heathenism.

The same thing is true of Christmas--it is of Roman Catholic origin.  It was instituted by Constantine the Great. He brought different heathen customs with him when he professed to embrace Christianity. The Pagan idolaters which Constantine renounced, observed mass in regard to different things. So Constantine brought  "the mass" with him.  So he ordered mass to be observed in  commemoration of the birth of Christ, hence the name Christmas, or Christmas. He also set apart the day in winter. No one knows when Christ was born, but it was not in the winter.  The shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks by night, in the fields, which they would not be doing in winter. Personally, we have nothing to do with either of those feast days. "To observe and keep them is to follow Rome."

[Editorial writings from The Primitive Baptist, Vol VI, Elder C. H. Cayce, p.130, 1935-1939].

"...the old Pagan temples were "consecrated" by  being  sprinkled with "holy" water, and by having the "saints" relics  put in place of the idols, and the old heathen festivals, such as Yule and Easter,* were transformed into so-called "Christmas" festivals.  *Yule, the old name for Christmas, is  from the Anglo-Saxon root [geola] as the word jolly, and was the Pagan festival of the Winter Solstice.  The word Easter is derived from Eastre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of Spring to whom the fourth month, answering to our April, was dedicated.  The ninth edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica well remarks:  "The ecclesiastical historian , Socrates, states with perfect truth that neither

Christ nor His Apostles enjoined the keeping of this or any  other festival.  The sanctity of special times or places was an idea quite alien from the early Christian mind."  [Church  History, Elders C.B. and Sylvester Hassell, p. 410, 1983].

We as Old Baptists should commemorate Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection every Sunday that we meet out at the house of the Lord. We need to ask God to give us courage to rise up against this paganism. How can we stand up for Jesus and uphold this paganism?

Second Peter 2:9 says, "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called  you out of darkness into his marvelous light."  Peculiar means belonging distinctively to one group or exclusive.  We have a lively hope that we belong exclusively to the elect family of God.  How can we show the world that we are a peculiar people?  As a start, we must turn our backs on these worldly  religious practices of Easter and Christmas.

We must earnestly pray that all of our ministers everywhere are carefully watching over their flocks.  Let's pray that they will courageously stand on the watch walls of Zion and cry aloud to warn the people if they see the sword coming.

Unanswered Prayers

by Don R. Richards

We are told that the music of the day tells us about our society and about the lifestyle of our youth.

In my youth I enjoyed the popular music of the day. And, today, I find myself searching out and listening to the "golden oldies" played on the radio that I listened to when I was in high school and college. I still remember must of the popular singing groups and bands, and catch myself singing along with the words to many of the songs I am able to instantly recall.

I "dropped out" of popular music for several years as it went through the so-called "heavy rock" years. Now, I wonder that I must be getting older. I actually find myself listening to more of the popular country and western songs on my radio.

One of the songs that really caught my interest was a recent one by Garth Brooks. Melba also has indicated to me it is a favorite of hers. It talks about the "blessing" of "unanswered prayers."

I had not thought much about the Lord's "blessing" in "unanswered prayers", but it is an important thing for me. As the song states: just because the Lord does not answer, does not mean that He does not care.

I know I am very appreciative today of a number of prayers of mine that the Lord did not answer. Although I did not know it at the time, I did not need the specific things I was asking.

It is a good thing the Lord knows our needs better than we do, and takes care of us when we fail to properly take care of ourselves. (There also is a sermon there on eternal life -- it's a good thing the Lord takes care of us instead of leaving it up to our failing abilities).

I know I too many times pray that the Lord will give me the things I want, and not necessarily the things I need. I get carried away with my worldly desires and I ask pray for those things I think I absolutely must have. I think I can take care of myself better than the Lord, so I simply pray to the Lord what I need. I look back at some of the things I have prayer for and realize now that it would have been a mistake for me to have gotten what I asked for.

Thank goodness the Lord blesses me by not answering my prayer with those things I ask of Him. After I realize I did not need what I asked and would have been worse off if it had been given to me, I hope I have thanked the Lord for not answering my prayer. Like the song says, sometimes God's greatest blessing is in unanswered prayers.

As always, if we followed the instructions in the bible, we would understand how to pray and what to ask for.

Simply turn to Jesus' sermon on the mount at the 6th Chapter of Matthew. Beginning at verse 5, He provides to us a sample of the manner in which we should pray. First we are not to use vain repetitions "as the heathen do". In following the example of what is popularly known as "The Lord's Prayer" we see many people ignore the "repetition" instruction of Jesus my memorizing and constantly repeating the exact words of the Lord's Prayer without thinking about the true meaning of the words there. We should use the example as a sample of the manner in which we are to pray and not as the prayer.

At Matt. 6:8 Jesus tells us one very interesting instruction about praying: "...for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him."

That is why we do not need to ask for the specific worldly concepts of our that we believe we want. The Lord already knows what we need.

The Lord's Prayer is an example of showing our faith, trust and total dependence on the Lord for all our needs. Jesus explains this further in verses 25-34. There we are told that the Lord will take care of His people. Our job in praying is not to seek specific things that we think we need -- our job is to praise and give honor and glory to the Lord.

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness..." and all the things of the world that we need will be provided. Read the Lord's Prayer at Matt. 6:9-13.

Through Jesus' teachings about prayer we are to praise and honor God, and let him take care of our specific daily needs; "for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things."

Many times the Lord's best blessings to us, is in unanswered prayers. We should thank Him for that.

VOICE OF THE PAST...

 A WONDERFUL CLUSTER OF GRAPES

By Elder S. N. Redford

"And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff, and they brought the  pomegranates, and of the figs."  Num. 13:23

This must have been a wonderful cluster of grapes. It was a pledge of what awaited the children of Israel.

Is there not something like the above that is experimental with all of God's people?  Listen, "to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that fadeth not away, reserved in Heaven for you." and again, "And when the Chief  Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory, that fadeth not away."  These texts with numbers of others show that the major part of our inheritance is yet in the future. Then what a blessing it is to have an  earnest pledge of it now while we journey thru' this wilderness world. This chosen land more often represents the church, but not always.

We are cross bearers now and in a land of drought. But we by faith lay hold of that better country which this land was a type. We often, so to speak have an abundance of evidence of our inheritance, yes, a whole cluster of blessings from that far off country. Let's see if we can recount some of them.

Did you ever find yourself feasting on the sweet doctrine of the resurrection of the dead?  Well, did you ever see anyone  raised from the dead  with your natural  eyes? You must have received and rejoiced in it  by faith. Have you ever gloried in tribulation? You know this is contrary to nature. If you have ever rejoiced in the Heavenly cross or the trials and conflicts, and even of your poverty. You must have done it by  faith.

You have been made more patient, more prayerful, more humble and obedient. Hence, you glory in  these sad trials, because of the effect it produces. You are weaned more and more from this wilderness world, and long to go on over and possess that goodland.

Sometimes you  find Jesus in  silent meditation, what a privilege and blessing!  How happy you  are and what clusters of blessings are in Him, more than you could mention. He is your shepherd, Priest, King, Prophet, Husband, Elder Brother, God and Father, yea, your all in all. It is an un mistakable evidence that if He would thus condescend to visit you. He will place a crown of glory upon your head when you are through suffering.

Then, again, do you not find the Holy Scriptures, which He walks with you by the way, untold beauties? Do they not abound and sparkle like a million stars, with promises  for just  such poor foot sore travelers as you are? They are "exceedingly great and precious promises," like the cluster of grapes, they are extra ordinary, none like them.

Our earthly inheritance is easily corrupted, easy to fade away, easy to be defiled. But that which is reserved in Heaven for us is to the very opposite. Yea, to depart and be with Christ is far better.

I suppose there will be tears of sorrow shed for me when I am gone, especially by my family, but there should be no tears for the departure of a child of God for He is only gone over to possess  his inheritance.

How good our Heavenly Father is to increase our desire  to that better country by giving us these pledges and assurances of our Home in Glory.

  ...... A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE

On July 4, 1993, we had a terrifying experience, not uncommon to the world, yet very alien to us.

A fire broke out in our home about 1:30 in the morning.  I had gone to sleep early and my faithful friend, a cat, named Linda Jean came along and  slept  by my side as usual.

She aggravated me for, what seemed hours, although in retrospect, I'm sure it was maybe, thirty minutes; as if to be warning me of danger.

I read my Bible and prayed, which is also a usual routine. As I read on  "faith and mercy," I kept reading, I felt the very presence of God by my side.

I went on to sleep and was awakened by severe, intense heat, and my husband, who slept across the hall; due to the fact he does security  work, erratic hours.  He was screaming , "Fire, fire, get out quick!"  My cat was still pestering me, as if to awaken me. In the process, I picked up the phone to call  911. The line was blank, burned into from the heat. The ceiling fan plunged to the floor. The carpet was on fire, the bed aflame.

My husband was ill and had not gone into work that night.  Normally, he would have been gone. His room was burning with overpowering flames, red, then dark, then yellow and orange.

I ran down the hall, out the front door to go to my neighbors to call 911, and told them to water their roof, or the flames would soar over to their home, also.  They were a Mexican family and there was a communication barrier. So, I ran across the street and awakened my other neighbors. Before long they came to the door, scared to death of someone screaming at 1:40 in the a.m.

I ran back to my home, the roof was ablaze, and fire breaking windows and things burning to the ground. Now I know the expression of "burning like wildfire." I knew where one cat was. She had slept with my husband. She kept going into the flames to rescue her sister cat.

I didn't know what to grab, what to leave.  I prayed, "Oh, God, just let us get out alive!"

The family pictures, my keepsakes, my purse, my jewelry, "Oh God, what do I do?"

I ran into the hallway and fire had overcome the kitchen, living room, garage and one bath room, and one bedroom. I had to help my husband out, as he was overcome with smoke. We grabbed one cover for him and ran into the yard. At the time the  firemen came and began to try to put out the blaze that was tremendous now in size and the heat was devastating.

The ambulance took my husband and me into the ambulance for oxygen. I remembered my cats and yelled to the firemen to save them. They pulled one out, [Trixie].  But they felt she was overcome already and couldn't be revived.  So, I begged them, "please save her."  They took Trixie into the ambulance bed and laid her beside my husband and began giving her oxygen. She did breathe and lay resting by his side. My cat, Linda Jean, however did not. She was found by my bed, not charred as everything in the room was, but just as though she was asleep.  She was lying by my big Bible, still opened to Hebrews, on "Faith."  The Bible  was not  burned.  I know there is a God, now, truly, I do.

I am a poet, song writer and musician.  In one corner was a lifetime of work in a suitcase, not even scorched.  My mother's items were also not hurt. She passed away in 1986. So, pictures and her things were special to me.

A million thoughts raced through my mind. It all boils down to one thing, nothing is worth a human life. Little by little, I accepted these thoughts, that material goods can be replaced; houses, furniture, clothes, cars, toys, all the things we collect to please us. Yet, in the end, all is vain, except love, family, and God, most of all. God is the Alpha and Omega.  s I recollect and  think back, it's as though we were like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednigo, in the Bible.  We came out unharmed.

I am changed from this experience. I know that all we have can be taken away very suddenly, and to live each  day, as if it were our last. Enjoy our love of God, and of family, friends, and neighbors.  And remember, to keep our faith."  "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen.

HIS PRAISE IN PERFECTION

In love for Este Lee Hausenfluke

There comes a time when we must part

Find sweet relief for this weary heart.

Call me not back where I used to dwell,

For Jesus is with me and all is well.

Death is not the ending, but truly the beginning.

The glass through which darkly we've seen

Will be clear before us and all He's done for us.

His praise in perfection we'll sing.

The family I love I fear not to leave,

For Christ is the Lord and He will relieve.

The other family which I've loved so much

The bride of the Lamb, the dear old Church.

Death is not the ending but truly   the beginning,

We'll drink from the fountainhead spring;

We'll sing with the chorus of those gone before us.

His praise in perfection we'll sing.

......IMA FERGUSON GREENAMYER

The San Antonio Primitive Baptist Church Northside lost a very special and dear member on  January 12,1996.  Sister Ima Ferguson Greenamyer is resting with her dear Savior as she longed for many months.  Her age and health prevented her from attending services for the last few years. The last time she attended was June 1995, on Saturday afternoon before fourth Sunday. She was in a local nursing home at the time.  It was such a blessing to have her with us one last time.

It was a joy to hear her tell of her early life in the Texas Hill Country near Utopia. She came with her family from Young County by wagon train in  the spring of 1897. A Primitive Baptist preacher and his family came with them to Utopia and a church was established at Hondo with her mother as a charter member. She was four years old at that time.

Sister Ima was born April 10, 1893 in Eastland County, TX, near Cisco and passed away January  12, 1996 at the age of 102 years and nine months. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Greenamyer and Son, Bill Greenamyer. She is survived by her sister, Rosa Hauer, grand daughter, Margaret Bowman of Mesa, AZ,  grandson, David Cadden and  wife, Mary Margaret of Arlington, TX; four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

BROTHER J.D. BOEN

Beulah Primitive Baptist Church was saddened by the loss of Brother J.D. Boen "Buddy" Boen on March 16, 1996.

Brother Buddy was respected  by his fellow deacons and church members for wise counsel and strong loyalty to the cause of Christ. Brother Buddy took church business seriously. Many times he would be present at conference meeting even though he suffered greatly due to illness. In this he was an example of faithfulness to us all.

We thank God  for his goodness to us! No one knew thirty-five years ago, as Elder J. E. Barrington was baptizing Brother Boen, that God was blessing us with a future Deacon! Only seven years later, on Nov. 9, 1968, Brother Buddy was ordained as a deacon. He served well in that office until his departure from this life.

Brother Boen's funeral was conducted by our pastor, Elder Troy Barrington.  His body was carried to rest by fellow deacons and friends. His spirit was carried to his Heavenly Father, by His Lord.

He was a faithful member of the Waco Primitive Baptist Church at the time of his death. His funeral was held at Adams Funeral Home in Marlin, TX. Elder Richard Martin and Rev. Paul Rawls officiated at the services.  Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery.

A Good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, loving favor than silver and gold [Psa. 22:1]. A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of  death than the day of one's birth. [Eccl 7:1].

The only way I know to  express words for a Good man is to use God's inspired words. These  scriptures properly apply to Elder Foy Evans, for he was indeed a good man. All who knew him  expressed these sentiments, not just after his death but while he lived. He was kind in his approach to everyone and gentle in his conversation. He was a man that drew others to him. He was a believer and defender of God's eternal salvation by grace and  grace alone. He loved to sing and attend singings. The Primitive Baptist Church was his home and he served her with love and dignity. Brother Evans was well known in North Central, Central and South Texas. Young people enjoyed his presence and attention  He loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and often  talked lovingly and fondly about  them.  He often expressed his feelings of falling short in service to others, when he actually gave of himself fully.  What more could he have given.

Elder Evans loved his church and he will be missed dearly.  We pray the Lord's blessings on his family.

He was born July 8, 1914 in Boswell, Ok to Joe and Leacy Crowder. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Marie and one son, Raymond M. Crowder, Jr.  He was survived by one son, Gene A. Crowder, and wife, Marita of Ruston, LA.; two daughters, Jeanette Smith, and husband, Bill, and Sharon Brown of Oklahoma City; three sisters, Gladis Davis of Midwest City, OK, Helen  Davis of  Blanchard, and Betty Boswell of Newcastle.

Raymond lived the majority of his life central Oklahoma. He was one that excelled in many trades.  He retired as a carpenter.  Much could be said about this man's accomplishments, however, we will only make this assessment, Raymond Crowder was respected by those that knew him.

After attending the Walnut Primitive Baptist Church, with his wife, Jewel, for  sometime, Brother Crowder presented himself for membership on September 3, 1948. He was gladly received and was baptized by Elder Sam T. Flowers. Some years later, date not known, his church set him aside and ordained him to the office of Deacon. Brother Crowder served his church faithfully, until his health prevented active attendance. Even after he was unable to attend services, he provided much sound counsel and support to Brother Freddie Shipman, a fellow deacon and his pastor. Brother Crawder was more than a deacon, he was a friend to all his Master's children. This our brother in Christ, served his Lord, his church and his brothers and sisters in Christ well, until the Lord  called him home.

Each of those that attend Walnut Valley Church could write many things of interest about  Brother Raymond. His obituary is  written in each of our hearts. His presence and his sound counsel will be missed by many.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 16, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. in the Baptist Church in Blanchard, Oklahoma, conducted by his pastor, Elder Bill Caraway.  Interment was in the  Blanchard Cemetery.

Written by Brother Freddie Shipman and Elder Bill Caraway at the request of  the Church.
