Jerusalem Sound Doctrine - A Matter of Great Concern The Ultimate Present The Master Brother Troy Barrington Ordained Wonderful Weekend Relatives of Elder James Wagner Spiritual Education His Marvelous Work Way - Truth - Life Death is Swallowed Up In Victory Services Planned At Springlake Church Sister Clarice Sawyer Sister Dorsie Cottrell Elder Darrel Duncan Brother Ford Waldrip Sister Ruby Mahurin Ruby Jewel Waldrip Sister Lillian Embery Benjamin Miers
The kingdom of Jerusalem, or Salem, was centrally located in the promised land of Canaan: the land that was known as the land of milk and honey. It was promised to Abraham by covenant from the Lord God, who called him out of his home land, and from his kindred, and from his father's house.
This kingdom known as Salem, "peaceful," was later called Jerusalem, "the fountain of peace." The capital city of Jerusalem was on Mount Zion. Jerusalem was the type of the chosen kingdom of God, long before the election nation occupied it. Melchizedek, king of Salem, who was also the high priest of the most high God, and he appeared unto Abram and blessed him, saying, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth and blessed be the most High God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And the psalmist wrote of one that was a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek; Thus giving us the very type of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is now king and High Priest, after the order of Melchizedek: Ruling over Jerusalem which is above.
Israel had no earthly king over her until she rebelled against God; asking for a king like the other nations of the earth. Thus God anointed Saul, forewarning them of the destruction that this would lead to. [God had established Israel as his kingdom and it was his rule over.] But because of her rebellion, he allowed, and anointed men over her. Giving them Saul as the first. [Saul represented that which is desired in the flesh.] Yet God established this type in David. [The anti-type has but one king, Jesus Christ, The Son of God: no other has been anointed to rule here on earth. All nations are under this king.]
The walled city of Jerusalem did not exist until Solomon became king, and began to erect walls about the temple city; which was on Mount Moriah. As the king of Israel he built the walled city of Jerusalem. And he was the last king to reign over all Israel, [in these three kings we have been given the type that shows God's work in establishing His Kingdom; Saul representing the physical, David showing forth Christ's rule over the spiritual, and Solomon setting the bounds thereof,] For it is written, "Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an ever lasting covenant, ordered in all thing, and sure; for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow." And, "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His."
The kingdom of Jerusalem, in the time of David was known as Jebus, after Jebusite one of the sons of Canaan, and was never over thrown by Israel until David lead the tribe of Judah against them and took the stronghold of Zion, it's capital city. Before this the tribe of Benjamin dwelled there with the Jebusites.
This walled city that Solomon built had within it mount Zion, mount Mariah, and Golgotha. This city was destroyed by the Babylonians. And though there was rebuilding of walled cities upon the same site, and the temple thereof restored, and the Jews who remained there until it's destruction, after the resurrection of Christ, are under bondage to those who ruled therein.
Be assured the kingdom that was prepared for the physical elect of God is the type of that New Jerusalem prepared of God for His Spiritual elect while they live up on this earth. John was allowed to see the antitype [the Spiritual Kingdom as it came down from heaven, that which is called the city of God.
She was prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. She is the new tabernacle of God, which is with men, and God dwells within them, saying, These are my people, and I am their God. The type was a very small place on earth, but the antitype is described as filling the whole earth, and shall never be destroyed: and saying, The Kingdom shall not be left to other people but it will consume all the kingdom of the earth, and shall stand forever.
This Spiritual kingdom has no need for a physical temple, for the Lord God and the Lamb is her temple. She is the Jerusalem that is above, which is free. She is the dwelling place of the general assembly of the first born, which was written in heaven. We are assured, by the word of God, that this kingdom will remain upon the earth as long as time exist, and that mount Sion [Zion] has been restored therein. And she will be eternal thereafter; for John saw the Lamb standing on mount Sion with those who had his Father's name written in their foreheads. And there will be no restoration of that which was the type. [The physical city of Jerusalem, that stands today, has no temple, and mount Zion is outside of the walls thereof.] Historically, the kingdom of God, which is the kingdom of heaven, was restored on earth in the approximate year of 70 A. B. not in it's natural state, but as a Spiritual Kingdom.
"But speak thou the things which become Sound Doctrine---Titus 2:1
Sound doctrine is a major subject in the Bible. Doctrine was a matter of great concern for our Lord Jesus Christ and the Apostles. There are at least fifty references to Doctrine in the New Testament alone, and most speak of the importance of holding to sound doctrine to warn against the unsound doctrine of men. The word sound comes from a Greek word "didasko" which means teaching or instruction. Sound doctrine then, must be True Teachings or Instructions that are without corruption [the deliberate lies of man.] The Apostle Paul tells us that "no lie is of the truth" [1 John 2:21,] Sound doctrine does not include half truths, as some of the more liberal brethren like to describe a lie that includes a small element of truth. That is like calling a glass of 90% pure water and 10% arsenic half pure water. There is only one problem - It will kill you if you drink it. Unsound doctrine can likewise kill.
Jesus said plainly to the Scribes and Pharisees: Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me, but in vain do they worship me teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." [Matthew 15:7-9.] Jesus said, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him Must worship in Spirit and in Truth." Now, unless I have some severe brain damage, by putting "precept upon precept and line upon line," [Isaiah 28: 9-10] and "rightly dividing the word of truth" [II Tim 2:15,] these passages teach me that" True worship is based on "sound doctrine" or Truth and that "Vain Worship" is based on "Unsound Doctrine" or the Doctrine of Men [that which is not truth.]
During our Lord's ministry "the people were astonished at his doctrine: for He taught them as one having authority [or power]" and not as the Scribes: and Pharisees. Speaking as the Son in subjection to His Father, Jesus said, "My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me" [John 7:16]. Jesus taught what the Father gave Him to teach - His Doctrine was from God - Not from Men. Jesus warned His disciples, "Take heed and beware of the leaven [doctrine] of the Pharisees and the Sadducees" [Matt 16:6, 12]. One should conclude from this the importance of knowing and holding to sound doctrine. It should be a matter of great concern for every child of God, and especially every preacher, as it was for Jesus Christ.
There are some preachers in the religious world who say they do not teach "doctrine" but teach the "practical aspects of Christianity." I will not name, but I will chuckle at the swindle, if you know what I mean. For sound doctrine is practical and sound practice is based on sound Doctrine. Anyone claiming they don't teach Doctrine is really saying, I don't teach the whole truth. And if they don't teach the Whole Truth they disobey the Commandments of our Lord Jesus Christ, who said, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you...." [Matt 28:19-20.]
Sound Doctrine was a matter of great concern to the Apostles and the first Primitive Baptist Church of Jerusalem. In Acts 2:41-42 we read, "Then they that gladly received his Word [the sound Doctrine just preached by Peter] were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued Stedfastly in the Apostles' Doctrine and Fellowship -". Sound Doctrine was a normal meal of Spiritual food being fed to the Flock of the first church. The Apostles did not get their doctrine from a library of books such as "Commentaries", written by Commentators, [pronounced Common-tatters]. Nor did they have books on "Systematic Theology", where men try to Systematize and Pigeon Hole the "unsearchable riches of God" whose ways are past finding out [Rom 11:33].
Their doctrine came from God, and God's Word, not man. Church Fellowship is based on sound Doctrine, for "How shall two walk together, except they be agreed" and "What fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness"? The church that does not teach, preach and practice sound doctrine is not a New Testament Church, and has no right or authority to call itself such, and especially no right to the name Primitive Baptist.
Sound Doctrine was a matter of great concern to the Apostle Paul. In Acts 20:17-38 we read a heart touching experience. Paul had called the Elders of the church of Ephesus together , and told them that Bonds and Afflictions awaited him in Jerusalem, and how that he would soon suffer death for the cause of Christ. But he said, "None of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God." Paul was determined to remain "sound in Doctrine and Stedfast in the Faith" even in the face of death. I pray that God will grant unto His ministers today this same desire and determination.
Paul told the Elders of this church, "Wherefore I take you to record this day--I have not shunned to declare unto you All the Counsel of God." He said, "Take heed therefore unto yourself, and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to Feed the Church of God," which he hath purchased with His own blood" What an awesome responsibility the minister of God has to Feed the Church and "declare the whole counsel of God" to the church. How dare any of us to Feed the Church with slop from the devil's pigpen of Unsound Doctrine.
But sadly enough, Paul warned that it would happen. He said, "For I know this, that after my departure shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise speaking perverse things [distorted, misinterpreted and corrupt things] To draw away Disciples after themselves [to have their own little following or church.] History has proven this to be a true prophecy. One need only to look in the yellow pages under churches for the evidence. And shame on us, even among Primitive Baptist we have some who "follow after" preachers, esteeming one preacher greater than another. God forbid! Follow after Jesus Christ only!
Paul wrote to young Timothy, whom he had left in Ephesus, "Take heed unto thyself, and unto The Doctrine: continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee" [1 Tim 4:16.] Both of Paul's letters to Timothy are filled with admonition to Be sound in the doctrine - to study the doctrine - to rightly divide the Word - to remain stedfast and true to the doctrine. In his second letter, Paul told him to preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all longsuffering and Doctrine. For the time will come when they [the church] will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lust shall they [the church] heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they [the teachers] shall turn into "fables" [a non-factual tale or myth]" [1] Timothy 4:1-4]. Sound Doctrine is not "Whatever sounds good" to the ears of the congregation.
To the satisfaction to the devil himself, unsound doctrine and fables is the main course of preaching" being served up now days to many religious congregations. This is not said to cast stones, but to simply state a fact that is evident to anyone who is aware of what is happening in the world of religion. We will do well if we can prevent unsound doctrine and fables from over flowing from the religious world into Primitive Baptist pulpits, but I fear there is already a "breach" in the wall. Jude refers to sound doctrine as "the faith once delivered unto the saints" and exhorts us to "contend for the faith ." In the "make believe world of religion" many have "departed from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy." Even among the Primitive Baptist we hear the trumpet making "uncertain sounds" as some preach "divers and strange doctrines" such as: Gospel Regeneration, No Hellism, Non-Resurrectionism, A postponed Kingdom Theory, and various aspects of Universalism; such as: God loved Esau, Open Communion and the acceptance of "Alien Baptism."
An Elder [Pastor or Preacher] must be one "holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and convince the gainsayers [deniers of truth.] For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, especially they of the circumcision: [Legalistic Jews, who like Armenians, trust in their own works for righteousness.] Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. Preachers for hire [or glory hogs] are usually the ones with the "itching ears" and the main source of unsound doctrine [fables.]
Unsound doctrine [confusion] is masterminded by the devil himself, but is usually preached by men "having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof." Men who are "lovers of their own selves" and "lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God." Men who are "ever learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." Men who use "feigned and enticing words" in "fair speeches" with "cunningly devised fables" in order to make merchandise of God's people.
We are told "from such turn away". However, sadly, we are also told that "many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of" [11 Peter 2:2.] Unsound Doctrine speaks evil of Christ, denies his honor and glory, while it always exalts man for his effort or knowledge. Men who love popularity and the limelight are usually the propagators of unsound doctrine.
Unsound Doctrine is revealed by God in His inspired word when we "rightly divide the word of truth" [II Tim 2:15] and put "precept upon precept, and line upon line" [Isaiah 28:9-10.] Sound Doctrine will always bring honor and glory to God. Sound Doctrine will always stand up under the scrutiny of the Scriptures. Sound Doctrine never clashes with any other scripture, but harmonizes with other scripture as long as scriptures are kept in their proper context. Sound Doctrine does not depend on an outside influence, such as secular history or human knowledge to prove it to be true.. Sound Doctrine is not based on the opinions of man. Sound Doctrine is truth for which no man can take glory or find boasting; but can only give Praise to God for giving him an understanding of the Scriptures.
In the term Unsound Doctrine we do not include the "mistakes" made by the novice who is exercising his gift while learning to "rightly divide the word of truth." Nor do I mean to imply that any of us are "perfect" and know all things. No, No! "If any man think that he knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know" [1 Cor 8:2.] "For now we see through a glass darkly; but then [when we have put off corruption and put on immortality--we will see] face to face: now I see in part; but then shall I know even as I am known" [1 Cor 13:12.] No minister of God ever gets to the point where he is beyond learning more from the word of God. As the old saying goes, "It's what you learn after you think you know it all that really counts."
Then the Scripture speak of Unsound Doctrine it speaks of holding to a Doctrine [taking a fixed position] Contrary to the Scriptures or one that has no Scriptural Authority at all. Many of us have different ideas about certain difficult passages of Scriptures upon which we may disagree. Such passages should be studied and discussed with a willingness to learn and know the truth. But some have taken the position which is described in an old adage, "Everyone is wrong except me and thee, and I am having my doubts about thee." Some act as "Know-it-Alls" and will hold to their positions even without any Scriptural support, or after being shown where they are wrong. Unsound Doctrine always lacks Scriptural Support and always depends on man's "private interpretations". Unsound Doctrine is almost always based on Scripture which has been taken out of context or by adding or taking away from the Word of God.
When unsound doctrine is preached by a few that bear the name Primitive Baptist it cast a reflection upon those who preach the word in "sincerity and in truth." Unsound doctrine disturbs the peace of Zion and will turn the ears of God's people "from the truth." I say Unsound Doctrine in order to be as mild as I can, even though it is contrary to my nature. I could just as easily say damnable heresies or Doctrines of Devils. But by being king, gentle and mild, I am trying to exercise the spirit of meekness, while "instructing them that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snares of the devil-" [II Timothy 2:24-26.]
We are to prove all things, Hold fast that which is good [1 Thess 5:21.] I encourage you - "Search the Scriptures to see if these things are true." "Rightly divide the word of truth." "Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine." "Let no man deceive you by any means." Jesus said, "when He, the Spirit of Truth is come, He will guide you into allTruth" [Jn 16:13.]
John wrote, "These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing [Holy Spirit] which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you; but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, you shall abide in Him" [1 John 2:26-27.] I repeat, Sound Doctrine comes from God and not from men! Study the Word of God! May God bless you as you do.
Written in love and defense of the faith.
GOD IS SO GOOD
Dear ones' of the Banner of Love: God is so good and faithful, and so just. I have been ill and during this time I have read my Bible more; prayed more, and enjoyed tremendously the Banner of Love's writings.

P.S. Enclosed is a small offering to be used as you see fit. And, Sister Opal, I loved meeting you at Cisco Church; and I love all the writings in the Banner.
I have received many wonderful presents before,
Their beauty was easy to see,
But when God, our Father gave me Jesus, His Son,
That was the ultimate present for me.
The Ultimate Present for me,
The ultimate present for me.
When God, our Father gave me Jesus, His Son,
It was the Ultimate Present or me.
You may attain special treasures in life;
Be famous, have friends so true,
But when God, our Father, gave you Jesus, His Son,
It was the Ultimate Present for you.
The Ultimate Present for you
The Ultimate Present for you;
But when God, our Father, gave you Jesus, His Son,
It was the Ultimate present for you.
Darlene Robertson McDonald

He walks with me daily,
I feel His presence near.
He taught me to love Him
And told me, never fear.
My prayers would be answered,
"In due time," He said,
For He clothed the raven,
And gave His people bread.
He said, "It is finished,"
As He died on the cross.
All that the Father gave
Not one soul be lost.
He is the Master,
Of all that He reigns.
He cares for His children
And died not in vain.
He is the Master, our Father's Son.

SISTER ROWENA DUNN MOVED
Sister Rowena Dunn has moved to a nursing home since she wasn't able to do things for herself. She sure enjoys the Banner of Love, since she can't get to church. If anyone in the area would visit her she would be very happy. She is a sweet person and loves to discuss the Bible.
We spent a lot of time with her in Arizona when she lived there. I had hopes to get to see her, but Nolan hasn't felt well since his cancer started up again. He's better now since the doctor gave him some antibiotics. He has filled all his appointments this year. Nothing can be done any more.

Minutes of the Presbytery of the Ordination of Brother Troy Barrington to the full work of the Gospel Ministry, September 9, 1995.
Elder J.E. Barrington, serving as moderator for the Midland Primitive Baptist Church asked the Presbytery to elect their moderator. Presbytery elected Elder George Johnson as moderator. Brother Johnson asked a prayer that Spirit of God direct our efforts in this meeting. Brother Dennis Walker was elected to serve as clerk for the Presbytery. Brother Walker selected Brother John Barnes to assist.
Brother Johnson acknowledged that neither the church, the ministers or any body but God can make a minister. We are only recognizing the gift that God has given to Brother Troy Barrington. Motion by Brother Bob Drummond, seconded by Brother Dennis Walker that Brother Jerry Waid serve as spokesman for the church. Passed unanimously.
Elder George Johnson expressed Brother Troy's desire that: the questioning be done by Elder Mark Burress, the ordination prayer be delivered by Elder J.E. Barrington, and the charge be delivered by Elder Howard Jernigan. Motion by Brother Leon Handley, seconded by Brother Wilburn Bingham, the Presbytery honor Brother Troy's desire, passed unanimously.
Questions were:
1] What is your relationship with Jesus Christ?
2] Do you believe that God has called you to the work of the ministry?
3] Questioned according to each article of the Articles of Faith of the Midland Primitive Baptist Church.
Elder Burress stated he is completely satisfied with the answers of Brother Troy Barrington. No other questions were asked. The Presbytery was satisfied with the questions and answers.
Elder J. E. Barrington offered the prayer as the Presbytery laid hands on Brother Troy. All then shook hands with Brother Troy Barrington. Sister Martha Barrington was brought forward by Brother Jerry Waid, the spokesman for the church. Elder Johnson asked Elder Jernigan to come forward and deliver the charge.
Elder Jernigan's charge was one showing the kind of walk that must be walked continually in order to plow the ground with all men, that when they come to a need in their life they would come to Troy because he is known by all as honest, meek, not condescending. One showing charity to all, that could be trusted, one that would show the mercy and kindness of God. Then he can plant the seeds of the gospel.
"Be faithful to God and to the faith that has ordained you."
Sister Martha be faithful, for God will never leave you. Show love for God's children. Honor your husband, thereby you honor God."
"May God go with you both is our prayer."
Elder Johnson asked for the reading of the minutes. Motion by Elder Burress with second by Elder Spence Kirkpatrick to accept the minutes as read. Motion passed unanimously.
Motion by Brother Bob Drummond, second by Brother John Barnes, we give Elder Troy Barrington the right hand of fellowship and dismiss the Presbytery and turn the meeting over to Elder J. E. Barrington as moderator for the Primitive Baptist Church. Motion passed unanimously.
Elder Johnson asked Brother Jerry Waid if the church was satisfied with the charge and work of the Presbytery. Brother Jerry answered in the affirmative.

On Saturday morning before the fourth Sunday in September, we left for Austin, Texas to visit my daughter and family, who have recently moved there from the state of Virginia.
On Sunday morning our daughter took us to the Primitive Baptist Church on Little Vine Street in Austin, for the morning service. My husband made a short introduction from Psalms 100 and offered prayer, then Elder Crawford delivered a very instructive sermon on how we should conduct our lives while we live in this world.
Following the lunch hour, we gathered around the tables and began singing. Such beautiful singing with all the parts was most enjoyable. We thank the Lord for such wonderful blessings, and trust that we shall again be permitted to meet with the dear church in Austin.
Prayerfully,
Mrs. E. L. Edwards

For me to say that, "I do not believe that Theological Seminaries are Scriptural," does not mean that "I am against, and do not believe in education in all secularizations, especially Theology. I believe in studying the Bible diligently. The Bible itself teaches abundantly to study - 2nd Tim 2:15; 1st Tim. 4: 13-16; Ecc. 12:12...I am not against teaching. What I am against and do oppose is what Seminaries teach as "Doctrine and Practice." You learn what you are taught, and what seminaries teach is where my opposition lies.
Seminaries teach History, English Grammar, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Latin, etc., which is good [however there are different dialects and texts of each of those,] but their doctrine is, again, where my opposition lies. I have such evidence that it is "man-made" rather than "God inspired and directed." "Man made preacher factories or incubators, where preachers are "hatched out" vs "God-Called" ministers exemplifies the contrast. Heb. 5:4 - "And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron."
Gal. 1:11-12 - Paul says he was not called, taught or instructed "of man," but of God when he was called to preach The Gospel. Gal. 1:16 - Paul says, when he was called to preach The Gospel he "conferred not with flesh and blood [man]." Gal. 1:17- Paul says, "neither went I up to Jerusalem [to the seminaries] to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia...." backside of the desert of God's Seminary.
God does call men to the ministry. God gives certain chosen vessels the zeal, desire, dedication, determination, motivation and unction, but man must do his own studying. God does not study for you. So, prayerfully, man scripturally should study the Bible diligently, asking God in prayer to direct and open his mind's door of understanding, and God can and does give "Gospel Light." Not all at once but "line upon line, and precept, here a little, and there a little" - Isaiah 28:10.
Seminaries, without exception, teach to varying degrees, "works mixed with grace" as Doctrine, in order to acquire eternal salvation. A case in point is found in the text--Romans 11:6 - "And if by grace, then is it no more of works; otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace; otherwise work is no more work." Eph. 2:9 - "Not of works...; 2nd Tim 1:9 - "Not according to works..." Titus 3:5 - "Not by works..."
Eph 2:8 - "For by grace are ye saved..." A case in point, by example, is a "Certain Southern Baptist Seminary" that teaches its students, pertaining to -1st John 5:1 - "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God..." Most all seminaries teach this same premise, but I just happen to personally know about this particular instance. They teach that "belief" is a required act of obedience on the part of man "in order to" acquire "Eternal" Salvation - be saved - that belief is the necessary step man takes in order to be born of God.
The grammar department of this particularly seminary was called in question and pressed on the grammar of- 1st John 5:1. The head of the Grammar Department admitted that in -1st John 5:1 - that the believer is the effect or result or the fruit of those "Born of God," and the belief was not the cause of being "Born of God," "Whosoever believeth -- is Born of God. He also admitted that the verb "IS" in 1st John 5:1 - is an intransitive verb which does not require or cast an object, but stands alone, and shows state of present being and not future results... He also admits that is the "correct grammar" of the verse; yet, when pressed why it was not taught correctly in class to the students, his answer was simply "The Board's Format, of this College, does not subscribe to such "Doctrine" because much will not "fit in" or harmonize with the program and desired objectives of our curriculum, because such "Doctrine" is not popular. The majority or Masses of the world's people will not "buy it", and such will not "Sell."
The Bible Doctrines of Election, Predestination, Sovereign Grace only etc....are enmity against the natural minds of the masses of men. Yes, the Bible speaks of God is Love but the same Bible also speaks of God's hate, anger, wrath, vengeance, indignation, etc. So if we are going to honour the subject of Love, we cannot pick and choose around these other subjects, and be honest with ourselves as sincere honest Bible students. God is Love, and a consuming fire, and a Spirit, and is Justice, and is Truth, and is a Mystery.....Too many people only see God in one light, and have too narrow a view of Him. Too many see God only as they "want to see Him," and not in All the different and varied aspects of His Divine Essence...
In the beginning of this article I mentioned that Theological Seminaries teach a "works system" for eternal salvation. Jesus says in Matt. 15:9 - "But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." those commandments of men come directly from Seminaries. Many years ago, I learned in secular sales training that we all are products of our environment. The media or press runs this Nations, yes, even the World. I specifically learned "that when writers write alike, readers read alike, causing the crowds to be wrong at the turn where it's most important to be right." We initially learn what we are taught. If you go to a Seminary, you are going to become what you are taught. You cannot walk through a brier patch without picking up some briars. Heresies by association rub off.
Let me give a practical scriptural example of my major thrust...Acts 8:26-39 - Philip was directed by the Spirit to go South and join himself to the Ethiopian Eunuch's Chariot. Philip was not directed by some board, nor was there any budget or financial arrangements promised. Philip was anxious to go, an he ran thither to him. Also we learn that Philip inquired as to what the Eunuch was reading. He was reading The Bible, not some "lesson plan" or "curriculum" mind-set. Also he was reading Isaiah 53. Now for a major point. Philip asked him "understandest thou what thou readest?" The Eunuch replied, "How can I, except some man guide me?" Now, Philip at this precise point has the opportunity to misteach him and lead him into a "works system" but does not. Why?
Because The Spirit is directing Philip, not some manmade program. Finally Philip takes The Bible itself, yes even the very self-same scripture and preaches to him Jesus Christ.
The Spirit directs every God called minister to preach Jesus Christ, no matter what text is employed. Every text in God's word teaches, leads to and point to Jesus Christ, and His finished work in Redemption, Atonement, Justification and Salvation by The Sovereign Grace of God, effective to all the elect children of God. Then and now, only did Philip baptize the Eunuch in Water. This action by them followed as an effect, and not the producing cause of eternal salvation.
In conclusion, it is my experience, that the Spiritual Education comes only from The Bible, the Divinely Inspired Word of God, and then only if, in God's Will, He gives light. Also I conclude that such good Historical, Secular, Natural Intellectual Education can and does come from "man's writings," but not Spiritual Education. It is one thing to be taught About Spiritual Matters and another to be enlightened Spiritually...
Read the Bible in order to Know it. Meditate upon it in order to Show It; Live by it in order to Show It; and Tell Others about it in order to Sow It.

The grand, inspired account of our Savior and His work is found throughout the Bible. His design and purpose regarding this are clearly stated in the Holy Scriptures. "Behold the Lord hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughters of Zion, behold Thy salvation cometh; behold His reward is with Him, His work is before Him." [Isaiah 40:10]. Since He cannot lie [Titus 1:2], the result is declared before Him. He shall not fail. [Isaiah 47:4].
A few words regarding the work of deliverance on behalf of His elect: "But now once in the end of the world hath He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself" [ Hebrews 9:26]: for the stated purpose of putting away sin. He did not say He put away sin until the day of regeneration and then the individual must take care of the rest--He put it away. How far? Of ourselves we could only estimate and guess, but His Word declares, "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us." [Psalms 103:12]. That is most interesting, we could travel to the North and then continue to the South, but if we travel east we will continue to the east and never arrive at the west. Likewise, our sins have been legally put away as far as the east is from the west and though we look for them we cannot find them.
He came to do a work. God the Father would not have been satisfied with any degree less than a perfect work. He was delivered for the heinous offence of His people. He rose again for our perfect justification [Romans 4:25]. He did not work out most of it and hope for a good outcome. He said, "My meat is to do the will of Him that sent me and to finish His work". [Jno 4:34] His work demanded perfect obedience at the time. Since He was manifested to put away sin and to finish His work, the theme of the finished work of Christ is surely good news to poor and needy sinners. It is finished! That cry rolls across the centuries, but it soothes and comforts the mourning children of God even today. From the cross He said, "It is finished", and to that point it was, but He still had to lay down His life in death. His sinless body must be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights, then rise never to be scorned, scourged, spit upon; never again subject to the depraved actions of men.
But now we can say, by the authority of God's Word, "For Christ is not entered into the Holy Places not made with hands...but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us" [Hebrews 9:24]. His earthly suffering is finished from the standpoint of our salvation, thank God. Somewhere, whether known or unknown to man, there is an empty tomb, and He is not there. He is risen!
Mark, among other writers, says "He was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God [Mark 16:19]. Paul said, "When He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high" [Heb 1:3], "but thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" [1 Cor 15:57]. He is appearing in the presence of God for us. The word "appear" here is a legal term, as an advocate would appear on behalf of a client. His work of High Priest still goes on today in the very presence of God. "If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." [1 John 2:1]
Since "whatsoever things written foretime were written for our learning" [Romans 15:4] please consider the statement "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him" [Mar 6:3]
If this were the only information we have regarding the earthly life of our Savior, we would learn that He was a carpenter, His mother was Mary, that He had four brothers and at least two sisters, however, I would like to briefly refer to His occupation as a carpenter. This word means not only a worker in wood, but also includes the work of a craftsman or a producer of fabrics, etc. The Lord labored as a builder, but He was also a builder on a greater level.
We know of no wooden structure which He built, but everywhere the eye of faith looks His spiritual house is seen. In Heb 3:3 we read, "For this man was counted of more glory than Moses inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house. [verse 4] For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God".
The Lord said in Luke 16:16 "The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it." There is a work required in order to come into the kingdom which the Lord set up here for His glory. But there is no labor on the part of one entering into the family of God [Col 1:13 "Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son". This is God's work. He sovereignly proceeds, His purpose unchanging . He builds His house without a sound of mens' hammers or saws [1 Kings 5:7]. Of the 3,500 or so religious orders we say some things they do are good [Proverbs 31:29]. "Many daughters have done virtuously; but thou [the church] excellest them all."
The church does not claim to add one member to His family. God builds His spiritual house; He doesn't contract the work out to preachers. He counted the cost and He had sufficient [Luke 14:28].
"Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen." [Jude 24,25]
By Elder Joe M. Jackson
St. John 14-6, Jesus saith unto him, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man cometh unto The Father but by me."
When we think of the way, we seem to confine it to the spiritual but we must remember the first man, Adam, was of the earth the second Adam was a quickening spirit, the Lord from heaven.1 Cor. 15, 45-47. So the Way was before the first man. Paul said, "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God. Heb II-3.
The framing of the worlds was part of the way, getting ready for the first man. To place Jesus as that way we go to St. Jn. 1:1, in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Verse 3, all things were made by Him. This establishes the Word as the person by whom all things were made that was made.
Man has not yet appeared, but the way has been prepared. Everything necessary to sustain his natural existence has been provided. A beautiful world to live upon, a world of perfection, no heat or cold, no storms of nature for everything was peaceful and in harmony.
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul. God did not form the man and woman, place them upon the earth and leave them with no directions or way of life, but gave them specific instructions as to how to live.
Man lost the way in his disobedience. Pro. 14: 12. There is a way that seeth right unto man but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Man followed after the way that seemed right to the flesh and died in trespasses and sin. Mans' way led him from God to eternal woe and misery with no way to return unto God, in spite of what some men teach, for he was dead. Just as dead spiritually as he is naturally when the breath of life leaves him, and just as impossible for him to reach for spiritual life from God as it for him to reach and get natural life when that life is gone, and if you don't think we were dead, read Eph 2:1-5.
You hath He quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins, and Even when we were dead hath quickened us together with Christ, and to clinch it He said, "By Grace ye are saved."
How glad we are that Jesus said, "I am the way, He didn't say, I will provide a way whereby man may do it himself, but I Am The Way. His love, His faith, His life, His voice, His death and His Resurrection is the way.
You may wonder why I included the voice, but I hear Him say, "The hour is coming when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live." No voice, no life. Then I hear Him say, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do."
This is the agony of His death, No voice, no forgiveness. Then the capstone supplied by Paul, 1 Thess. 4:16-17, The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, and the dead in Christ shall rise-No voice no resurrection from corporal death.
His death is not the way of death but life. His way provided us with a wonderful body, a good place to live. Placed His love in our hearts that we might have the joy of loving our brethren and sisters in Christ, our families, and friends and neighbors, giving us of His faith that we may please our Father. God and his life was an example for us to follow.
His death reconciled us to God and His resurrection gave us hope that as He lives we too will live also..
I see that I can't get to the Truth and Life in my text in this article, maybe later. May these truths bring you the joy in reading that they did for me in writing them.
Your Brother in hope, Elder Joe M. Jackson The Banner of Love, Feb. 1974
I can't remember preaching a funeral service where I failed to use this proclamation of victory, either as the text, or as part of the sermon of the day. The complete verse reads, "So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory." And the next verse, "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory." [1 Corinthians 15:54, 55]. The Lord willing I would like to share some of my thoughts concerning the fifteenth chapter and especially these verses.
When death comes and severs the ties of our friends and kindred, and the gloom of the open grave spreads its dark and dreary mantle before us, there is nothing that can brighten the scenery before us like the glorious doctrine of the resurrection.
The assurance of this doctrine is, that in the resurrection of the dead such a change will take place so that we will never be threatened again with death, mortality or corruption, but rather, although our bodies are "sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption". This is, of course, the assurance of the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead which is emphatically a cardinal point in that heavenly message of glad tidings sent to earth, called "the gospel of your salvation."
The Apostle Paul speaking in solemn protest against a negative position concerning the resurrection says this, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and becomes the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward they that are Christ's at His coming." [verses 19-23]
Paul takes the position that Christ has risen from the dead, and therefore the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead is an established and incontestable truth, and viewing Him as the "firstfruits" of them that slept, is a pledge of the resurrection finally of all saints, the entire crop or harvest, in the likeness of the "firstfruits." This raising of the entire crop, or gathering is set for the last day, when "the trump shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we all shall be changed."
His witnesses for number and testimony is unparalleled, "For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures. And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures; And that He was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve. After that he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, He was seen of James, then all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as one born out of due time." [verses 3-8].
Next the Apostle Paul shows how Christ is regarded as the proper firstfruits of all the crop. He says, "Since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming." [verses 21-23].
We hear much today about man's being restored back again, during a future thousand year reign of Christ, to what Adam lost by transgression, but all of this is wild speculation. The resurrection is a very different thing from a restoration back to Eden; for in the resurrection we are changed, and put on a nature that is spiritual and immortal, which the earthly Adam never had before the fall, and of course which he never lost in disobedience.
Now here was the first Adam, the earthly man and the firstfruits of all the harvest he represented, and by whom came death. By the earthly man came mildew, death and seed-rotting, his heirs were plunged into slavery, bondage, pain, dishonor, guilt, death and hell. The earthly man was acting for all his posterity and by him, the first man Adam, "came death."
Adam was made an innocent and upright man, crowned with glory, and set as a monarch over all of the lower part of God's, new and very good creation. All was in subjection to him. However, this high place was held by him upon conditions, if he obeyed God he would keep his honor and his life; if he did not obey, and ate of that one tree only, then he lost all. This condition small as it may seem, brought about the ruin of the good world and was instead a cursed world.
He ate! and his kingly scepter fell, the crown fell from his head and the world is plunged into sin and wild confusion. He is no longer a monarch, no longer are the beasts in subjection. The insects suck his blood and there is a fear between him and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the waters. The world is ruined; death reigns; murder, pestilence, sin in rampant and exhibiting itself in a long train of evil Hell's mouth is open wide to receive into its darkness the guilty wretches, who, on the conditional plan, have lost an Eden, a crown, a vast and very good dominion, are separated from their Creator, and all is lost forever.
So by man came death, and death passed upon all." Death, the king of terrors and terror to kings, that last relentless enemy that received enemy that received his strength through a transgressed law and constantly roams about all the world, land and sea devouring continually. Is a stranger to pity, a foe to sympathy and human kindness. For thousands of years has marched ever onward, never turned back or controlled by any power. Neither age, nor sex, high or low, king or peasant can escape him, bribe him to friendship or escape in any way. He first came into our land by the earthy man, "the first Adam," and he has reigned ever since without a rival.
But, the Apostle's proclamation is, "For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die even so in Christ shall all be made alive." The second "man" is the Lord "from heaven," the last Adam who" was made a quickening spirit." The whole fullness of the Godhead dwelt in Him bodily; therefore He was the Lord from heaven. The heavenly man, although a native of heaven, is nowhere in scripture called a spiritual man, separate and distinct from the Godhead. No! He is a Man, a native of heaven.
This heavenly man came forth at the appointed time in the body which God had prepared for Him, and so the "Word was made flesh." [see John 1:14]. "But when the fullness of time was come, God sent forth his son made of a woman, under the law." [Gal. 4:4]. The Word of God did not put on flesh, but was made flesh and could carry our sorrows, bear our sins, hunger, thirst, and suffer weariness, pain of the body and soul, for all for us, and never on account of any sin or depravity of His own nature; for He was body, harmless, and undefiled.
This heavenly Man was put to death in the flesh, bore our sins in His body on the tree; His soul was made an offering for sin, and as man He yielded up the spirit, and was dead. His life as man was poured forth with His blood, and His soul was exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death.
He died the shameful, lingering, and painful death of the cross. His God forsook Him, and there were none to help Him. He died according to the scriptures, was buried, and rose again the third day, also, accoding to the scripturdes. "So by man came the resurrection of the dead."
As all of God's children in the flesh have borne the image of the earthly man by whom came death, so shall all bear finally the image of the heavenly Man, by whom came the resurrection of the dead.
The heavenly Man, in whom God hath chosen all His children as heirs, and in Whom every spiritual blessing is sure to all the seed, by Him came also the resurrection of the dead. His body was not some spiritual body, but the same body, which was nailed to the cross. The print of the nails in His hands, and the spear in His side, proved His identity. His saying to His disciples, in Luke 24:39, "Handle me and see, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have," not only proves the body, but also proves that it was not some spiritual body which His spirit had assumed.
The resurrection of the dead is a different thing from an ascension to heaven. Jesus arose from the dead about forty days before His ascension to heaven. During this time was the opportunity to test His real identity, and teach much concerning the nature of His kingdom [church]. To show the apostles their commission and labor; and in time show them the properties of the resurrected body, and the changes wrought on the body making it a spiritual body, yet proving it to be the same body. His resurrected body was the identical body in which He had died. No one on either side pretended to say that he had risen in a spiritual body, and that His body of flesh had not risen from the dead. A highly reputable number, listed in verses four through eight attest to seeing their resurrected Lord.
The same identical Jesus, which was crucified and buried was now eating and drinking with His disciples. Spirits do not eat such food as broiled fish and honey-comb this risen body was the same body of flesh.
So first was the resurrection and then His ascension, the same order with the saints. His ascension up to His [our] Father, when the bright cloud invested Him in His ascension, in the same body, His body becomes spiritual, yet the same body but changed from natural to spiritual or heavenly. The body of flesh and bones in which He appeared to Mary and in which He ate and drank, was not left behind when He ascended.
Enoch and Elijah did not leave their mortal bodies behind to decay, but they were translated or changed in the process from natural to spiritual or heavenly. The saints who shall be alive on earth at the coming of Jesus at the second and final time shall be changed. They will not exchange their bodies for other bodies but shall be changed, "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye," and this sudden change or translation, so sudden as hardly to be distinguished, they like their Lord, with their same bodies, will be changed to "bear the image of the heavenly."
The Apostle John teaches us that, "The hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation," [John 5:28-29] Here both the righteous and the wicked are included, and their final state assigned to them, also in Revelation we find, as in all cases, where the just and unjust are raised, and that the just are raised first. All the dead whose name "was not found written in the book of life [Jesus] was cast in to the lake of fire." [everlasting hell] see Revelations 20:15.
So we have seen, "by man came death" and all its fear and gloom, we might look at it with dread and fear, but dark! weary pilgrim, all is not gloom for "by man came also the resurrection of the dead," "death is swallowed up in victory," behold the saints arise, not to what Adam lost. No! but by the Heavenly Man came the resurrection to immortality and a crown of righteousness, and to victory which God gives us through our Lord Jesus Christ. Now in praise to our blessed Lord we cry, "O death where is thy sting? O grave where is thy victory? We sorrow not as others who have no hope. Amen.

The recent death of our dear Sister Clarice Sawyer brings to mind many fond memories of days spent in her good Christian home. We always felt to be in a Godly home where love was the central theme. And songs filled the air with praise of God.
Elders, deacons, church members and friends always found a lodging place, and came away feeling a sweet angelic atmosphere prevailed.
Each of her 98 years were record breaking with love.
We, with the sorrowing loved ones are in hope of the dawning of the resurrection day.
Humbly,
Elder Conway Wood

ELDER DARREL WAYNE DUNCAN
Whereas God, in His infinite wisdom and loving kindness, called our beloved brother and co-pastor, Elder Darrell Wayne Duncan, to his eternal home on August 28, 1995
Brother Darrel Wayne joined the New Garden Primitive Baptist Church and was baptized on September 29, 1968, and was ordained to the full work of the gospel ministry on April 29, 1979. Brother Darrel Wayne was a faithful member of the church and servant of the Lord until his death.
In the early years of his ministry Brother Darrel Wayne served three churches; Sugar Creek Church at Gilman City, MO; Big Rock Church near Versailles, MO; and Pleasant Hill Church at Trimble, MO. At the time of his death he was still pastoring Pleasant Hill Church and was also co-pastoring his home church near North New Garden. He was blessed to fill appointments in other Primitive Baptist Churches in Missouri and Iowa and preached the doctrines of grace, namely the doctrine of the resurrection which he loved so much.
Brother Darrel Wayne was enabled by the grace of God to serve us faithfully, and his labors were abundantly blessed of the Lord. His love and caring for the church greatly endeared him to us all, and we feel truly grateful to the Lord for His loving kindness in giving us the labors of this faithful servant.
While we deeply mourn our loss, we bow in humble submission to the will of God in removing Elder D
