Articles of Faith

  1. We believe that the scriptures of the Old and New Testament, as set forth in the King James Version of 1611, are the word of God, and the only rule of faith and practice. II Timothy 3:16 - 17.
  2. We believe in the one true and living God, consisting of the Father, the Word which is Christ, and the Holy Ghost. 1 John 5:7; Ephesians 4: 4-6.
  3. We believe in the doctrine of unconditional election, and that God chose His people in Christ Jesus before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4 & 5), and that God predestinated all the elect to be conformed to the image of His Son, and to the adoption of children of God. Romans 8:29; Ephesians 1:5
  4. We believe in the doctrine of original sin (Romans 5:12, 17-19), and that man is unable to recover himself from his fallen state of death by nature. John 6:37-40, 44.
  5. We believe that sinners are justified in the sight of God only by the imputed righteousness of Christ. Romans 3:24; 5:19 & 20; II Corinthians 5:21.
  6. We believe that all the elect are redeemed by the death of Jesus. Romans 5:8-9; Revelations 1:4-5.
  7. We believe that God's elect are called, regenerated and sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:30; I Peter 1:2; Jude 1:4.
  8. We believe that the Saints shall be preserved in Christ, and shall never fall finally away. I Peter 1:3-5; Romans 8:38 & 39.
  9. We believe that baptism and the Lord's supper are ordinances of Jesus Christ, that believers are the only proper subjects for baptism, that immersion is the only mode, and that none except those who have been regularly baptized are to be admitted in Communion Service. We believe that as Christ washed his disciples feet, we ought to wash one another's feet, and that washing the Saint's feet is an example of love and humility, which should be practiced by the members of the Church. Matthew 3:16; Acts 8:36-39; Mark 14:14; 16:16; Luke 22:11; John 13:13-15.
  10. We believe in the resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust, and that the joy of the just shall be eternal and the punishment of the unjust shall be of endless duration. I Corinthians 15:40-44,50-56.
  11. We believe that no one has the authority to administer the ordinances of the Church except those who have been regularly or scriptural ordained, having been baptized and come under the hands of an authorized presbytery. Acts 13:2, Heb 5:4, Matt 28:16, I Cor 4:1
  12. We believe that no member can belong to a secret order. Gen 49:6, Deut 13: 6-8, Psalms 64:1-4, Eph 5: 6-12

Church History

A faithful group of Primitive Baptist members from various church bodies had been meeting at the home of Brother and Sister Roy Hopkins to hold services. On October 19, 1961, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit of Almighty God, this group of believers selected Elder Billy Derrick as moderator and set forth their desire to assemble themselves as an organized body of the church of the Living God, called by the name of Primitive Baptist. Brother J.W. Rhyne was selected as the church clerk and was instructed to request the area church bodies to form a presbytery for an organizational meeting scheduled for December 10, 1961.

The nearby churches sent their ordained help to do this work. On the prearranged date, a presbytery consisting of Elder Billy Derrick, Elder J.H. Casey, Elder JA Rowell Sr. and Elder H.J. White responded along with the following deacons: Brother M. T. Hopkins, Brother Elmer Singletary, Brother Chapman Hanks, Brother C.A. Key, Brother Allen Cook Brother Roy Hopkins, Brother O.C. Bailey Brother J.A. Rowell Jr., Brother E.J. Watts, Brother Johnie Bass Jr. and Brother Raymond C. Lee. The presbytery performed all the work necessary and Gulf Coast Primitive Baptist Church was organized. The charter members were Brother Roy and Sister Jo Hopkins, Brother L.D. and Sister Sue Mansel, Brother Rual Warren, Brother Sam J. and Sister Allie Mansel Elder Billy and Sister Waldeane Derrick and Brother J.W. Rhyne. Sister Flossie Owens came this same day on her profession of faith and was baptized in January, 1962. The church began meeting at the American Legion Hall in Freeport. While in regular conference, the church as a newly constituted body chose Elder Billy Derrick as their pastor and Brother J.W. Rhyne as their clerk. On July 22. 1962, the Church voted to petition by letter to join the Primitive Association of Texas. Brother Roy Hopkins was sent as delegate and Brother J. W. Rhyne was sent as an alternate to the upcoming Association.

Gulf Coast Church voted on September 25, 1966 to begin meeting on Sunday in a meetinghouse on Stratton Ridge Road. The Church then voted to purchase this property on October 22, 1972.  Due to unforeseen circumstances the property was sold in November of 1989.

Elder Billy Derrick served as pastor from December 10,1961 until July 28, 1963. Elder Raymond C. Lee faithfully attended this group from July 26, 1964, through January 22, 1978. Elder Jerry Cleburn agreed to serve, which he did from January 22, 1978, until September 23, 1984. Elder Anthony Blevins came to them as pastor on September 23, 1984

In September 1988, Elder Billy Moseley was ordained to the full work of the Ministry and called as pastor. While in conference on December 10, 1989, the Church voted to relocate to the Community Room of a bank in Friendswood, Texas, after the close of the sale of the Church property.

On December 8, 1990, a merger of Spring Grove Primitive Baptist Church and Gulf Coast Primitive Baptist Church formed Harmony Primitive Baptist Church. Over the next three years, it became evident that plans to re-locate the Church to a more central location were not financially feasible. So, in conference on January 16, 1994, Harmony Primitive Baptist Church moved to rescind the merger and revert to the two churches as before. This action was done in peace and harmony and without any loss of fellowship or love one for the other.

In January 1994, Gulf Coast Primitive Baptist Church resumed meeting in the Community Room of the CoAmerica Bank in Friendswood, Texas, with Elder E. D. Ramey as pastor. In October of 1994 the church purchased an unimproved acre of land on Munson Road in Alvin.

In 1998 the church began meeting in the home of Sister Ann and husband Steve Fraley. The church purchased a small building in June of 1998 and moved it to the property on Munson Road. The first meeting was held on July 12, 1998.

On July 21st, 1999, in humble submission to God's Holy will, His humble servant Elder Elton D. Ramey, went home to be in the presence of the Lord. He had preached the unsearchable riches of God to the comfort and edification of the flock. Elder Ramey served the Gulf Coast Primitive Baptist Church from 1994 until his death.

In July of 1999, Elder Andrew Stull was called to complete the year as pastor.

On November 11, 2000, the church ordained Elder Steve Clark to the full gospel work of the ministry.  Elder Clark served as the pastor from January 2001 through January 2003.

On December 14, 2002, the church ordained Elder Trey Collier to the full gospel work of the ministry. The following January the church called Elder Collier as pastor.  Elder Collier is still serving as pastor today.

Our Heavenly Father continues to bless the church with his Spirit.
